What Happens to Frozen Embryos Following Divorce: Arizona’s New Law

Many couples across the United States have chosen to store their frozen embryos in fertility clinics as a result of in vitro fertilization. IVF is a very popular choice for many, as about 85% to 90% of infertility cases are treated with drug therapy or surgical procedures. But, what happens to those frozen embryos if the couple ends up getting divorced? The State of Arizona has come up with a solution. According to Buzzfeed, Arizona is the first state to pass a law that would give the embryo to the divorced person who wants to develop it to birth. Researchers say marriages only have about a 50% chance of lasting, which means a solution was much needed. Unfortunately, not everyone feels the same. Gary Marchant, a law professor at Arizona State University, spoke with Buzzfeed about how th...

Arizona Becomes 7th State to Introduce Dental Therapists

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey recently signed a law that allows dental therapists to practice in specified settings throughout the state. The law will take effect August 3 and will allow dental therapists, a midlevel provider, to be a licensed profession. Along with six other states, Arizona will now allow dental therapists to practice in settings like tribal settings, federally qualified health centers, and nonprofit community centers. Like many states, Arizona has growing dental health needs. And with dental therapists, certain procedures, like fillings and extractions, will be able to be done at decreased costs. With the number of people who need dental implants growing by 500,000 every year, more states are taking action to provide easier access to dental care. The bill was sponsored b...

Deaths Among Older Drivers and Pedestrians On the Rise in Arizona

The Association for Safe International Road Travel estimates that over 37,000 U.S. residents die in road crashes every year. For senior citizens, the risks of driving accidents often increase due to slowed reaction times, reliance on medication, or changes in vision or hearing. A recent report has found that seniors in Arizona, in particular, have become much more likely to be involved in a fatal crash in just the last few years. Since people are living longer on average, seniors now account for a larger proportion of the population. Currently, there are an estimated 46 million people over the age of 65 living in the U.S., representing 15% of all Americans. By 2060, researchers estimate that this demographic will represent 24% of the entire population. Because seniors are living longer,...

Arizona Lawmakers Fighting for More Regulations on Tattoo Industry

When it comes to tattoos, many states have strict regulations to promote safety. Arizona is one state with very few restrictions when it comes to tattooing. While Arizona requires artists to use sterilized tools and bans anyone under 18 from getting a tattoo without being accompanied by a parent or guardian, the state does not regulate the industry as a whole. Because of this lack of regulation, tattoo parlors aren't required to be inspected regularly and tattoo artists don't have to go through regulated training. Rep. Kelli Butler, D-Paradise Valley, introduced a bill that, if passed, would require body art establishments to get a health certificate. House Bill 2442 would require body art establishments to adhere to sanitation guidelines, would allow health departments to inspect th...

State Rep Introduces Bill to Prevent Suspension Among Preschoolers in Arizona

According to a recent Civil Rights Data Collection survey, black preschool students are 3.6 times more likely to receive suspension as white students. While suspension rates are up across all preschool students, this new survey showed how serious preschool suspension rates are. Lana Sabir, the owner of Tomorrow's Star Educational Center in Southfield explained that their facility is full because preschoolers are getting kicked out of child care centers. "...It's hard for parents to work and try to survive without having someone watching their children...that's the problem especially in this area," Sabir said. While forming a multinational school identity can help students understand the globalization of the 21st century, about 20% of the students enrolled in preschool are black...

Cybersecurity Deficit May Leave Arizona’s Small Business Vulnerable

As the majority of businesses operate online in some capacity, the demand for quality cybersecurity has skyrocketed. Since over half of businesses are worried about cyber attacks, these types of security jobs are growing significantly. But are Arizona's IT professionals up to par? Some experts don't think so. Daily Miner reports that the state is in need of cyber security workers and those who are in this profession may need additional training to keep up with demand. Brett Scott, founder of Arizona Cyber Warfare Range, told Daily Miner that IT employees are not being held to the right standards. "We have a huge cybersecurity skills gap," he said. "And most people that are in the cybersecurity industry are so bad at their jobs that if they were in ...

Arizona Agencies Take Steps To Prevent Holiday Accidents

Every year, 3 million people are injured in car accidents on U.S. roads. Around the holidays, travel can become even more treacherous due to weather and dangerous behaviors like alcohol consumption and drowsy driving. This year, Arizona officials are making a concerted effort to make the streets safer -- but is it enough? In mid-December, the Arizona Department of Transportation and Arizona Department of Public Safety partnered with the Governor's Office of Highway Safety to launch a safety campaign, called "Drive Aware, Get There," to reduce the risk of drivers being involved with wrong-way crashes. The campaign shows drivers how they can improve nighttime travel safety and what they should do if they come across a wrong-way vehicle during their drive. Arizona's Department of Transport...
