Moldy Breast Implants Cause Suffering, More Common Than People Think

Plastic surgery doctor draw line patient breastBreast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries, and it’s typically pretty safe. About 400,000 breast augmentation cases are performed each year, and in 2009, there were more than 3.557 million cosmetic surgeries performed in the Mountain region — where Arizona is grouped — and the Pacific region combined.

However, accidents do happen, some of which can be more traumatic than others. Just ask the Florida woman who discovered mold in her breast implants.

Back in 2011, Anne Ziegenhorn of Shalimar, Florida became perilously sick. The totally healthy woman began putting on weight, losing her vision, and experiencing chronic pain. Her thinking got so foggy that at point, she thought she was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Ziegenhorn went to countless doctors who offered up numerous diagnoses — all incorrect — until she consulted with Dr. Susan Kolb.

WEAR-TV reports that Dr. Kolb, the author of “The Naked Truth About Breast Implants”, has seen many women with mold in their saline implants, which is often the effect of defective valves — and sure enough, that was the cause of Ziegenhorn’s health concerns, as well.

Some patients also have detoxification problems, which make them particularly sensitive to the implants’ silicone shells. About 25-30% of the population suffers debilitating reactions, according to Dr. Kolb.

That’s not say that Dr. Kolb is anti-implants. After all, she has them herself. However, she does believe that women need to get their implants replaced every eight to 15 years for the sake of safety.

Amanda Gilcrease, a patient who had had her implants removed, told WEAR-TV that after replacing her moldy implants, “the burning, numbing, stabbing, shooting, electrical shocking pains throughout my body went away immediately.”

After suffering two years in unbearable pain, Ziegenhorn believes that Dr. Kolb’s diagnosis and the immediate removal of her implants saved her life.
