Writer/Lawyer Leighton Rockafellow Sr. Uses Book Signing to Benefit Arizona Humane Society

Leighton Rockafellow Sr.'s "day job" is as an attorney who specializes in wrongful death, medical malpractice, and nursing home neglect, among other areas. While that might seem like a job reserved for only the very stern and serious, he and his wife, Millie, have proven that's certainly not always the case. According to a press release on PRweb.com, the couple, who have written multiple children's books, were at the Merci Gallery in Tucson, AZ, this past week engaging in a book signing, with all the benefits going to support the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. “It was a fantastic event that put smiles on the faces of all who attended,” said Leighton. “Additionally, all proceeds went to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, so that they can continue their mission of placing pet...

Arizona Boy’s Medical Mystery Baffles Doctors

An Arizona boy is suffering from a mysterious medical condition that is leaving doctors puzzled at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. As of March 24, 12-year-old Luke Fanning has been in the hospital for a total of 65 days. He is now in recovery, but he was admitted to the hospital when his headaches suddenly led to seizures, a brain aneurysm, and a medically induced coma. Doctors had to put Luke in a coma for nine days in order to allow the swelling in his brain to subside. "All I remember is just waking up, walking in to her (mom's) room, complaining that I had a really, really, really bad headache, and just blacking out," Luke said. When he awoke from his coma, he couldn’t speak or move the left side of his body. He regained his speech the next day when he shared a heartfelt moment w...

Arizona Couple Recounts Horrifying Events of Brussels Bombing

Compared to most means of travel, flying is considered one of the safest. After all, more than 3 million people worldwide safely fly on commercial airliners every day. On March 21, however, it was the airport that was unsafe for travelers in Brussels, leaving 31 people dead and 230 people injured. Arizona residents Andrew and Denise Brandt were there when it happened and thankfully lived to tell the tale of the terrifying terrorist attacks. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the Brandts recounted the horror, shock, and luck the couple feels after surviving the bloodbath. The couple landed in Brussels on Tuesday morning. Denise works for an aid agency in Liberia, and they were waiting for their connecting flight. Before their arrival, they had traveled to Bangkok, Thailand, to...

Arizona’s First Breast Milk Donation Center Opens in El Rio

Arizona’s first human milk donation center opened its doors on Tuesday at El Rio’s Birth and Women’s Health Center. El Rio is the newest addition to a national milk bank network, and Tuscan-area mothers with extra breast milk are encouraged to donate. Mother’s Milk Bank is a nonprofit organization based out of Colorado. The organization collects, pasteurizes, and distributes breast milk to infants all over the country whose mothers cannot provide milk. Olga Ryan, the birth and women’s center manager, stated, “What we really want to be able to do, is give our moms a ready choice: Do you want formula or breast milk?” The benefits of breast feeding are well-established for both mother and baby, and recently doctors have found that breast milk is successful in killing drug resistant bact...

Glendale Bans Billboards Near Loop 101

The city of Glendale, AZ, recently denied the request of a billboard company to place ads along the stretch of highway near Loop 101 and Bell Road. It has been a long and arduous fight for the residents of Glendale, who prefer to maintain the serenity their neighborhoods currently offer. Glendale is a city split into two distinctly contrasting sides. The northern side boasts views of creeks, deserts, and hills, while the southern end is a bustling metropolis; residents like the city's split personality and do not want to see changes to the serene northern side. There already exists on the southern side of Glendale, along Loop 101, a three-mile stretch in which 10 electronic billboards, each a towering 65 feet tall, line both sides of the freeway. The concept of a "scenic-corridor"...

“Phoenix Fire” Signals the Possible Beginning of Fire Season in Northern Arizona

In northern Arizona, the Heber-Overgaard Fire Department's crews worked hard to fight a wildland fire, which grew to cover almost 300 acres earlier this month. The fire tripled in size over the period of an hour, and has been dubbed the "Phoenix Fire" by firefighters. The flames reportedly died down because of high humidity and lower temperatures. Although the cause and exact location of the fire could not be confirmed, smoke could be seen from Highway 377, and officials stated that the fire was located in a "Phoenix park wash area." This fire signals the beginning of a critical period in northern Arizona, during which the amount of precipitation received will set the tone for the upcoming fire season. "We do have a lot of light fuels from last year's rains that we had. So ther...
